The paper deals with investigations concerning the plasmon resonance in an optical planar waveguide structure, applied in the construction of sensors with spectral detection. The surface plasmons in a multi-layer planar structure (with complex refractive indices) have been described, as well as the way of numerical solutions of physical equations describing the propagating electromagnetic field in such structures. The physical interpretation of obtained results has been presented, too.

Investigation results of acoustic emission signals coming from partial discharges within chosen generator coil bar, in relation to measurement results of apparent charge introduced by partial discharges sources, are presented in the article. Analysis is based on amplitude distributions calculated for acoustic emission signals, ordered at different measuring points for different values of the supply voltage. In order to assign acoustic emission signal to its advance degree a descriptor named by an acronym ADP (defined by authors) is calculated for each amplitude distribution. Descriptor families describing acoustic emission signals measured at particular measuring points (for different supply voltages) are presented in relation to apparent charge introduced by acoustic emission sources. These families concerning acoustic emission signals, measured at different measuring points for identical supply voltage, enable us to locate acoustic emission sources with maximum activity.

The paper deals with investigations concerning a wide-band gap material, viz. zinc oxide ZnO. Special attention has been devoted to the determination of the spectral transmission of zinc oxide layers deposited on quartz substrates. These investigations have made it possible to determine the optical spectral range in which this material is transparent as well as the edges of absorption. The presented investigations are valuable particularly concerning the application of zinc oxide in optoelectronic and photonic structures as well as in systems of waveguides and sensor layers of integrated optics.

The article presents researches concerning a system for a possible blood volume measurements applied in POLVAD prosthesis. The proposed solution is based on the Helmholtz resonance principle. The article shows the state of art in blood volume sensors for using in the POLVAD prosthesis and introduces a newly proposed solution. The construction of the sensor and the results of static tests are presented. The work is summarized with future development plans.

This paper presents the results of investigations on novel pressure measurement methods to be for used in the project "Polish Artificial Heart". The investigations concerned possible pressure sensors for noninvasive blood pressure measurements in selected points around the pneumatic ventricular assist device (POLVAD). The fiber pressure sensor and the possibility of pressure measurements with piezofoils were tested. The paper includes preliminary results and development plans.

The following paper introduces the problem of noninvasive pressure measurements in Polish artificial heart prosthesis. The pressure sensor is proposed and introduced, and preliminary tests are shown. The paper deals with the proposed sensing elements, requirement noninvasive solution and preliminary tests of polyurethane membrane transmission. The paper includes also experimental results of a fiber pressure sensor introducing noninvasive pressure measurements with pressure transmission through a polyurethane tube wall.

In this paper we present the results of investigations of graphene oxide layers using the SAW structure (structure with surface acoustic wave propagated) exposed to the affect of low concentrations of hydrogen and nitrogen dioxide in synthetic air. During the measurements, the differential signal (from two measuring channels) was recorded. The sensing graphene oxide layer was deposited only on first channel, whereas the second channel was not covered by any additional layer. The tests were made with various concentrations of the analyzed gases and at various temperatures of the sensing structure during the measurements. Analyses were performed with special emphasis on the time response of the sensor structure to changes in the gas atmosphere.

In the paper the results of investigations are presented concerning the influence of humidity of air on the resistance of a gas sensor structure with a graphene layer. The affects of nitrogen dioxide and humidity action on graphene were studied. We indicated that humidity might play an important role in determining the gas sensing properties of the graphene layer. In the paper it has been shown that in the case of a nitrogen oxide sensor, the reaction of NO_2 with water vapour can generate permanent defects in graphene.
