The aim of the study was the evaluation of the occurrence and type of nodular lesions of thyroid gland in the materials of the 1st Department of General and Endocrinological Surgery of Medical University in Białystok from 1993 to 2006.Material and methods. The clinical material was based on 3477 patients that underwent thyreoidectomy for nodular disease in above-mentioned period. Four periods and research groups were established with regard to the character of the goiter according to histopathological examination.Results. The number of thyroidectomies was significantly decreased. There was a increase in the percentage of patients operated for multinodular non-toxic goiter and a significant decrease in the number of patients with multinodular toxic goiter in the whole research group. The percentage of patients that underwent thyroidectomy for mononodular non-toxic goiter was increased as well in women as in men. Mononodular toxic goiter rarely occurred and there was no case of it in men. With a passage of time there was a significant increase in the number of patients operated for papillary cancer as well as for follicular cancer. Medullary cancer and non-differentiated cancer rarely occurred in analyzed material.Conclusions. There was a distinct decrease in the frequency of the occurrence of nodular lesions as well as in the number of thyroidectomies. The profile of thyroid nodules underwent changes in given periods pointing out the lower frequency of toxic goiter and the higher frequency of neoplasmatic lesions in the third and particularly in the fourth research period.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the extent of thyreoidectomy in given years from 1993 to 2006 with the estimation of the occurrence of different types of neoplasmatic lesions in thyroid gland.Material and methods. The study included 3477 patients that underwent thyreoidectomy for nodular disease in above-mentioned period. The data were analyzed in reference to the extent of resection and the type of thyroid nodule.Results. Subtotal resections predominated and constituted 64.82% of all performed thyreoidectomies. The study showed a gradual increase in the number of total resections, from 14.86% in 1993-1996 to 27.33% in 2004-2006. The majority of removed glands revealed defects of almost total nodular degeneration. There was a significant increase in the number of papillary cancer in analyzed period.Conclusions. The profile of thyroid nodules underwent changes pointing out the higher frequency of thyroid cancer in recent years, what affected increased necessity of performing total thyreoidectomies. The more frequent stated total nodular degeneration and radicalization of thyroidectomies may be associated with an observed tendency to prolonged conservative treatment.

The occurrence of synchronous tumors of the gastrointestinal tract is rarely observed in general surgery, diagnosis is frequently incidental, often intraoperatively. The aim of this study was to present a case of a 50 year-old male patient admitted to the Department of Gastroenterology, University Hospital in Białystok, due to abdominal pain, significant weakness and excretion of tarry stools. Imaging diagnostics revealed the presence of a large gastric tumor (histopathological type - adenocarcinoma), and single metastasis to the liver. The patient was qualified for total gastrectomy. Surgery was performed at the 1st Department of General and Endocrinological Surgery, University Hospital in Białystok. Rectal cancer, which was observed during the operation was removed simultaneously.

Splenic cysts are rare disease that are diagnosed incidentally during imaging studies. In recent years, through the development of diagnostic methods the detection of their are increased, although documented and described in the literature of cases is still low. The disease can be asymptomatic - this concerns mainly small cysts, but greater changes cause unspecific symptoms resulting from oppression of enlarged spleen on adjacent organs. Due to the etiology of cysts, they are divided into primordial and false. Primordial cysts have an epithelial lining which distinguishes them from false and they are divided into parasitic and nonparasitic. Because of the possibility of complications cysts usually treated surgically, with the aim to preserve the splenic parenchyma. We present a case of a 28-year-old woman who has revealed the presence of epidermal cysts of the spleen

The aim of the study was to present and discuss the results of surgical treatment of congenital spherocytois in our department.Material and methods. Between 1994 and 2001 in the Department of General and Endocrinological Surgery at the Medical University in Białystok, 14 surgical excisions of enlarged spleens were performed because of congenital spherocytosis. The patients included five men and nine women aged between 17 and 61.Results. Diagnosis; non-surgical treatment and principles governing the decicion to use surgical intervention were evaluated by the Department of Hematology. Histopathological examinations for all cases confirmed the diagnosis of congenital spherocytosis.Conclusions. The undertaking of carefully considered procedures by the surgeons and hematologists in our departments resulted in propitious results in all the cases presented.
