The aim of this research was to explore the process of mentalization, treated as a state, under two different conditions of activation of attachment representations – secure and insecure – in a group without psychological disorders, according to structural and descriptive diagnosis. The research verified assumptions about the relationship between mentalization under activation of the two types of representation and attachment, and about the influence of the activation of different mental structures on the fluctuation of the mentalization level. The Borderline Personality Inventory and Symptom Checklist were used as diagnostic measures, and the Experiences in Close Relationships – Relationship Structures instrument was employed as a measure of contextual attachment and analysis of the narrations generated under the two research conditions, based on the Metacognition Assessment Scale. The results show that mentalization, treated as a state, depends on specific attachments only to a certain extent, and that there are two patterns of mentalization that differ in terms of their dynamics. Key words: mentalization, attachment, representations, activation.
