Article presents development of the design method to measure personal growth in children and youth, as a result of struggling with negative life events. The Personal Growth Questionnaire was developed in two versions – as a self-rating instrument – KOW-27 – D/M, in which child himself/herself assess perceived changes and in version for parents – KOW-27 – R/O, who evaluate changes of their child. The Personal Growth Questionnaire (both versions) consists of three parts: A, B and C. In the first one the examined person chooses from the list of 16 events the most negative situation, which he/she has experienced. In part B – indicates time lapsed since event occurred, and then (part C) using 4-point-rating scale (from 0 – I did not experience this change to 3 – I experienced this change to a great degree) indicates the level of changes perceived as a results of the experienced situation. The reliability of the questionnaire is high (Cronbach’s alpha in version of self-evaluation is 0,94, in version for parents – 0,97).
The article, which refers to positive psychology approach, attempts to answer the question whether experiencing stress may promote individual’s health. The definitions of eustress, including its temporary understanding, indicators of eustress and studies indicating for positive impact of experienced stress on health are presented. The role of positive emotions was taken into account. Moreover posttraumatic growth phenomenon and coping strategies promote health were regarded.
Experiencing stressful situations, such as cancer disease, may be related not only to negative consequences, but also positive changes. Those changes contribute the phenomena, which have been called posttraumatic growth. It includes changes in self perception, relating to others and changes in life philosophy. The purpose of the study was to answer the question whether in a group of women with breast cancer (after mastectomy) the posttraumatic growth occurs, and to what extend, and to investigate if resiliency (as a personality trait) may promote this phenomena. 67 women with breast cancer (aged 42-75; M = 60,43; SD = 7,07), after mastectomy participated in the study. The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory and the Resiliency Assessment Scale were used. 50% of women revealed high level of posttraumatic growth (25% low and 25% average). The positive changes were higher in relating to others and appreciation of life, lower in self perception and the lowest in spiritual area. Resiliency positively (but moderately) related to posttraumatic growth, self perception, in particular. The factor of resiliency, it is tolerance to failures and treating life as a challenge, appeared the predictor of posttraumatic growth.
The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between posttraumatic growth, which was a consequence of experienced traumatic event and the level of satisfaction with life. The study group consists of 86 person (62 men and 24 women), aged 36-87 (M = 60,5; SD = 10,05), who experienced myocardial infarction. Half of them participated in rehabilitation program. Two methods were used in the study: Life Satisfaction Questionnaire and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. The results revealed poor relationship between positive changes aftermath trauma and life satisfaction. The overall score of Life Satisfaction Questionnaire correlates only with positive changes in relations to others. These changes appeared the main predictor of satisfaction with life among persons with myocardial infarction.
The occurrence of traumatic events is fairly common – approximately 70% of people experience them. The results of research conducted in recent years indicate that the experience of traumatic events entails the occurrence of adverse effects, among which all the symptoms of a posttraumatic stress disorder are mentioned, but also there are positive changes, expressed in the form of posttraumatic growth. Among the conditions of negative and positive consequences of experienced trauma, a special role is attributed to cognitive activity, including rumination. Rumination related to a specific event can play diverse roles. One of them, termed intrusive, are automatically appearing thoughts which a person is unable to control, and which are not linked to attempts to solve the problem. This type of rumination is similar to intrusion, although the concepts are not identical. On the other hand, rumination called reflective or intentional is of a constructive nature, serving to attempt to solve the problem. Intrusive rumination favours the occurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and deliberate rumination – posttraumatic growth. The article focuses on the role of rumination in the occurrence of negative, but mostly – due to the novelty of the technique – positive effects of the experienced trauma. Research indicating the associations of rumination both with the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and posttraumatic growth is presented. A revised model of posttraumatic growth has been presented, which emphasises the importance of rumination, both intrusive and deliberate. The article also contains consideration over further directions of research in this area and practical implications, related primarily to promote posttraumatic growth.

The article presents characteristics and measurement of a resiliency construct and psychometric properties of Polish scale to measure resiliency in children and adolescents – SPP -18. The scale consists of 18 items, rating on a 5-point rating scale (from 0 – totally disagree to 4 – totally agree). In a sample comprised of 332 adolescents, aged 12-19 years (42,2% men and 57,8% women) 5-factor structure of the scale was revealed, which explained 63,8% of total variance. The internal consistency of the scale is satisfying, with Cronbach’s alpha for the scale = 0,82 (from 0,76 to 0,87 for particular factors). The 4-week test-retest stability was high (r = 0,78). Results of SPP -18 correlate positively with extraversion, and negatively with neuroticism and agreeableness. They also link with coping strategies: positively with active coping and planning and negatively with behavioral disengagement, self-blame, denial and turning to religion.
The aim of the study was to establish the role of posttraumatic growth for health behaviors of people in late adulthood period. The analyzed research group was 130 people in the age of 61-88 lat (M = 71,32; SD = 5,81), 60 were men (46,2% ) and 70 (53,8%) women. The group consisted of 70 generally healthy people – the participants of the Third Age University, and 60 patients of cardiology clinic. The research tools were Health Behaviors Inventory authored by Juczynski (2001) – to measure health behaviors, and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (authored by Tedeschi and Calhoun (1996), in polish adaptation of Ogińskia-Bulik and Juczyński (2010)) – to measure posttraumatic growth. The responded seniors exhibited an average level of posttraumatic growth and above-average level of health behaviors. Age did not differentiated the level of health behaviors. Gender and type of traumatic experience were associated with health behaviors. The correlation and regression analysis confirmed the role of gender, type of trauma and posttraumatic growth indicators in manifesting health behaviors by seniors. The importance of posttraumatic growth in predicting health behaviors was different depending on the category of health-related behaviors.
Experience a traumatic situation usually entails negative consequences in the psychic dimension, including in the form of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However, the traumatic experience may also lead to the emergence of positive changes, known as posttraumatic growth (PTG). Among the factors influencing growth after trauma stresses the importance of the individual properties of the man, including resiliency. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship occurring between the resiliency and negative and positive consequences resulting from experiencing a traumatic event. Study involved 80 patients after heart transplantation, implantation by-passes or artificial heart valve. The Assessment of Resiliency Scale (SPP-25) of the own design, and the Polish version of The Impact of Event Scale (IES-R) and The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) were used in the study. A key role in the prevention of symptoms of PTSD plays the properties of resiliency, such as optimistic attitude to life and the ability to mobilize themselves in difficult situations. In turn, the positive changes following trauma are related to openness to new experiences and a sense of humor and tolerance for failure and treatment of life as a challenge. Negative and positive effects experienced life events may co-occur with each other.
The purpose of the investigation was to establish the relationship between chosen personality variables, it is sense of coherence, basic hope, type D personality, and social support with sense of purpose of life and its change among individuals who lost close person. 40 subjects (20 men and 20 women) participated in the study which was conducted in two stages (after the loss and 6 months later). Mean age was 43,8 (SD=17,6). Five measures were used in the study: Purpose in Life Test, Sense of Coherence Questionnaire, Basic Hope Inventory, D-14 scale to assess type D personality, Social Support Questionnaire. The results of the investigations confirmed the relationship between personality variables with sense of purpose of life in both stages. They also indicated that increase of sense of purpose of life is related primarilly with sense of coherence and social integration.
Do oceny percepcji choroby wykorzystano Skalę Oceny Własnej Choroby, do pomiaru potraumatycznego wzrostu – Inwentarz Potraumatycznego Rozwoju, a radzenie sobie z chorobą oceniano za pomocą Skali Przystosowania Psychicznego do Choroby – Mini-MAC. Uzyskane wyniki potwierdzają znaczenie zarówno poznawczej oceny własnej choroby, jak i podejmowanych strategii radzenia sobie w procesie występowania pozytywnych zmian potraumatycznych. Słowa kluczowe: potraumatyczny wzrost, poznawcza ocena choroby, strategie radzenia sobie, stwardnienie rozsiane
