This review describes function and physico-chemical properties of gastrointestinal mucus. In perticular the role of mucins is shown. Recently studies of the chemical composition and structure of mucin is discussed. The biosynthesis of mucin and mechanism of viscoelastic gel-forming properties is described. In this review the function of mucus in gastric ulcer and cancer disease is shown.
The review article describes the role of H. pylori in pathogenesis of chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers and gastric cancer. Possible mechanisms of mucosa damage by H. pylori was presented as well as the methods of diagnosis and therapy of these diseases.
