A taxonomic and ecological analysis of 16 taxons of diatoms was carried out. Five species, Thalassiosira weissflogii (Grunow) Fryxell et Hasle, Navicula hrockmanii Hustedt, N. gottlandica Grunow in van Heurck, N. tenelloides Hustedt and Amphora thumensis (Mayer) Cleve-Euler were for the first time identified in Poland. Diatoms were from microbenthos samples collected in karst springs (close to the town of Tomaszów Mazowiecki), a dam reservoir on the Mroga River, the Rawka River and in peat (close to the town of Sieradz) and brown coal post-excavation pit (at the town of Konin).

Sampling was done in one site established in the Luciąża River on for occasions over the annual cycle. Observation data are presented in contingency tables, and their significance tested with the χ² test. Results obtained testify to the dependence of the numbers of dead and alive cells first of all on season, and also on water temperature.

Employing a developed equation for determining the coefficient of naturalness a valorization of 55 randomly selected mid-field depressions occurring in the South Kujawy region was carried out to estimate the naturalness of their floras. While investigating the dependence between the number of species and increase in areas of "kettle lakes" it was calculated that at least 20 mid-field depressions of total area not smaller than 14.5 ha per each 10 km² should be preserved to protect 90% of plants growing in the investigated habitats.

The study contains a characterization of forest communities of the Puszcza Mariańska reserve, taking into account their antropogenous deformations. 5 associations and 4 subassociations were distinguished: Circaeo-Alnetum, Tilio- Carpinetum corydaletosum, T-C calamagrostietosum. Querco-Pinetum typicum, Q-P molinietosum, Leucobryo-Pinetum, Molinio-Pinetum. 7 degeneration forms were specified, of these 6 for Tilio-Carpinetum calamagrostietosum and 1 for Querco-Pinetum. A map of actual vegetation (1 : 5000) was prepared, which displays the natural and antropogenous differentiation of plant communities of the reserve.

In this paper a preliminary list and characterization of the synanthropic flora found in the area of the Płock in 1996-1999, have been presented. The rich variety of the synanthropic flora of this town is an effect of differentiation of habitats and man’s economic activity. The synanthropic flora of Płock consists of 530 taxons. Among synanthropic plants predominate apophytes (63,8%).

The present study describes changes that have occured in the phytocoenosis of Pino-Quercetum abieieiosuni in the „Jamno” reserve. It was determined that the vegetation of this reserve, due to its high dynamics, recovers to its natural form of Tilio-Carpinetum lypicum with Abies alba. The disapperance of Pinus silvestris from all layers of the phytocoenosis and an essential increase in Carpinus betulus and Quereus rohur in the tree-stand was observed. A slight quantitative increase in Abies alba in the tree-stand was also noticed. Changes in the field layer consist mainly in the extinction of species typical of coniferous and increase in species typical of deciduous forests.

In July 1982 desmids cells enclosed in mucilaginous sheaths were recorded during drought in the Bagno Przerębiec transitional peatbog. They were the specimens of Cosmarium contraetum Kirch., Cosmoastrum punctulatum (Breb.) Pal.-Mordv. var. kjellmanii (Wille) Pal.-Mordv., Desmidium cylindricum Grev., Desmidium swartzii (Ag.) Ag. ex Ralfs and Raphidiastrum avicola (Breb.) Pal.-Mordv. Besides, in certain cells a change in the colour of chloroform from dark green to olive or yellow-green and numerous oleaginous granules were observed. It may be presumed that the cells of the above mentioned algae are capable of surviving drought due to their ability to produce mucilaginous sheaths and areolas, which protect them from drying.
