Sulfate-reducing bacteria (e.g. Desulfotomaculum acetoxidans) exist in animal intestine. These bacteria are able to bind heavy metals (e.g. cadmium or lead). Comparative investigations on the composition of cellular walls of Desulfotomaculum acetoxidans - depending on the initial Fe2+ supplement in the medium (7.5, 57.5 and 507.5 M) were performed. Iron(II) was cumulated as FeS or as pyrite (FeS2). However, if the initial amount of iron was higher, its majority (46% 85%) was transported onto the membrane. It was determined that the siderophore found in Desulfotomaculum acetoxidans was deferroxamine as in animals.

This paper discusses the effect Thiobacillus denitrificans DSM 807 has on the denitrification processes in the municipal sewage treatment plant MEANDER. The experiments consisted of three stages. At the first stage, the efficiency of denitrification process in MEANDER's chambers was analysed. The research was conducted in the spring-autumn period. The results proved the occurrence of weak denitrification during 24 h sedimentation periods. It must be noted that the strongest denitrification occurred in January. At the second stage, laboratory tests proved that in the conditions of moderate aeration Th. denitrificans shows the same denitrification path as in the conditions of zero aeration. On the other hand, slowing down the denitrification processes in the conditions of high concentration of tiosulfate was observed. At the third stage, attempts to inoculate activeted sludge in the chambers of MEANDER with Th. denitrificans culture showed that the intensity of nitrate reduction increased several times in comparison to the analogous process without inoculation.

In this work the attempts to increase the efficiency of nitrate reduction in denitrifying bacteria cells were made. Two different tests were used. One procedure was based on the prolongation of the sedimentationtime in order to decrease the levelof inhibiting O2 in the sewage. The level of NO3 was increased in this test compared to 6 h "standard" alternate sedimentation/aeration, but the speed of nitrate eduction wasnot so satisfactory. The other procedure involved attemps to increase tghe number of denitrifying bacteria in the sedimented chamber.Theeffects in both tests show the increase in speed of nitrate reduction, particularly after 24 h from the addition of the culture prepared in advance. However, the disadvantage of the second way was introducing additional NO3 together with the bacteria.
