. The single copy sequence D22S16 from human chromosomal region 22q13.1 that carries a putative conserved gene, was used to probe a chromosome 22-specific cosmid library. Genomic sequencing of one positive, 40 kb long cosmid (C1155) revealed a hereto unmapped gene (a subunit of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase II, POLR2F), a SOX9-related sequence and 12 expressed sequence tags. Although not parts of one consecutive gene, all 12 ESTs and, in addition, the polymerase gene are oriented in the same transcriptional direction within the genomic sequence represented by cosmid C1155.

We seek for an oscillating center solution of the wave function satisfying the Schrödinger equation for a nonrelativistic charge particle in an arbitrary external field, where the oscillating center of physical system is a motion governing by a guidance formula of the classical mechanics and at the same time, the physical system obeys the rule of quantum mechanics. In terms of our approach, one enables to know how quantum process may actually come about. The results are applied to analyze the Landau level. We explain successfully that the orbit of oscillator center for the Landau level is circle.

This work investigates the hot tearing behavior of Mg-Al and Mg-Zn alloys quantitatively based on the measurement of contraction force using an experimental setup which was developed at MagIC. An emphasis is given on the analysis of typical hot tearing curves to understand the corresponding metallurgical phenomena shown by these curves. The recorded hot tearing curves, i.e. the contraction force vs. temperature or time, contain valuable metallurgical information. They give not only the precise temperature at which the hot tearing initiates, but also depict information about the propagation of hot cracks. Combined with thermodynamic calculations, the critical solid fraction corresponding to the occurrence of hot tearing can be calculated. Further microstructural observations were performed. Several phenomena such as the crack propagation and refilling of cracks, which influence the slope of hot tearing curves, are also discussed.

The study aimed to compare MspI polymorphisms in the 3rd intron of the porcine gene encoding the pituitary-1 transcription factor (Pit-1, renamed as POU1F1) among 5 breeds and to determine the associations between its genotypes and growth performance in a commercial pig population by using the PCR-RFLP technique. Significant differences in genotypic and allelic frequencies were found between the meat-type and fat-type breeds (P < 0.05), and between miniature pigs and others (P < 0.05). No breed deviated from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (verified by chi-square test). The general linear model analysis revealed that higher body weight on day 180 (BW180) and average daily gain (ADG) were significantly associated with POU1F1 DD genotype (P < 0.05). The differences in BW180 and ADG between DD pigs and both CD and CC pigs were significant (P < 0.05), and the DD pigs had a significantly higher body weight on day 45 (BW45) and on day 70 (BW70) than CC pigs (P < 0.05). All measured growth traits, except for body weight at birth (BWB), showed higher values in DD pigs. The D allele had a favorable positive effect on growth traits. Thus POU1F1 is a potential major gene or marker for growth traits.
