The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety (33) of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in sharing of gifts and friendship with their families, other athletes, and their communities. The Special Olympics movement often goes beyond the sports competition formula. During the last few years, the movement has developed many new global initiatives, which expand its former sports activities. They include: 1. Coaching excellence and the coaching model 2. Partnerships with international (regional) sports federations 3. Sports Resources Teams (SRT) 4. Extended quota for high level athletes 5. Athletes Leadership Program (ALPS) 6. Young Athletes Program 7. Youth volunteer initiatives 8. Unified Sports Program 9. Motor Activity Training Program 10. Healthy Athletes Program These initiatives fulfill and expand the existing program, which was launched in 1968 and is the largest sports organization for people with disabilities worldwide, with very important new social, marketing, and developmental aspects of life, going far beyond activities met in other sports organizations.

The aim of the study was to explore whether passive stiffness of the hamstrings influences the strategy of maintaining postural stability. A sample of 50 subjects was selected; the final analyses were based on data of 41 individuals (33 men, 8 women) aged 21 to 29 (mean = 23.3, SD = 1.1) years. A quasi- experimental ex post facto design with repeated measures was used. Categories of independent variables were obtained directly prior to the measurement of the dependent variables. In stage one of the study, passive knee extension was measured in the supine position to assess hamstring stiffness. In stage two, the magnitude of postural sway in antero-posterior direction was measured, while varying the body position on a stabilometric platform, both with and without visual control. The margin of safety was used as a measure of postural control. The magnitude of the margin of safety increased significantly between the open-eye and closed-eye trials. However, although we registered a visible tendency for a larger increase of the margin of safety associated with lower levels of passive hamstrings stiffness, no significant differences were found. Therefore, this study demonstrated that hamstring stiffness did not influence the strategy used to maintain postural stability.

Materiał i metody: zbadano 185 osób - 98 kobiet (53% ogółu) i 87 mężczyzn (47%). Wyniki: Odnotowano korelacje wieku i momentu zdiagnozowania choroby. Wiek badanych kobiet i mężczyzn ujemnie koreluje z fizycznym i psychicznym komponentem zdrowia, zaś samoocena zdrowia słabo koreluje z aktywnością fizyczną.

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a metabolic disorder that is characterized by insulin resistance in combination with impairedinsulin secretion from the beta cells of the pancreas. Pharmacological treatment largely consists of supplementing theinsulin level, the use of medication which improves the sensitivity of cells to insulin and that affects their production. Of essentialimportance is the modification of lifestyle, especially adaptation to a diabetic diet and weight reduction. One of the most important risk factors of diabetes is the low level of physical activity of potential patients. Aim of the study: To determine the relationship of selected elements of lifestyle, in particular, physical activity on the selfassessment of health in patients with type 2 diabetes.Material and methods: 185 people - 98 females (53% of the total) and 87 males (47%) were examined: these being patients with diagnosed type 2 diabetes of a diabetic clinic from several Silesian cities. In this study, psychometric techniques supplemented by basic anthropometry with the measurement of body height, body weight and the circumferences of the waist and hips were used. The survey consisted of metrics and standardized questionnaires: physical activity - HPA, quality of life related with health - SF-36. For statistical analyses used were: descriptive statistics - mean and standard deviation, differences level calculated by analyses of variance (ANOVA). Dependencies using the Pearson correlation coefficient. The adopted level of statistical significance was: p≤0.05.Results: The correlation between the time of diabetes diagnosis and age were statistically significant. There were no gender, use of diet, BMI and WHR statistical significant differences between the patients who adhered to the dietary recommendations in practice, and those patients who neglected this type of therapy. Differences between physical activity with regard to gender, BMI and WHR index were no found. Both in females and males, age negatively correlated with physical and mental components of health, while self-assessment of health indifferently correlates with physical activity. Conclusions: Physical activity in patients with type 2 diabetes was at a low-level. Declared physical activity and diet had no impact on the BMI and WHR index. Physical activity positively correlated with the self-assessment of health.

Background: The vast majority of pain dysfunctions of the cervical spine is underlain by prolonged overload and one effective therapy is traction. The aim of this study is to assess the influence of cervical spine traction on changes in heart rate and arterial blood pressure in people with arterial hypertension and normotension. Material/Methods: The study involved a total of 168 patients, in whom chronic cervical spine pain syndrome of low intensity, with no radiation of symptoms and with no significant functional limitations occurred. The subjects were intentionally allocated into a group with arterial hypertension and a group with normotension. Results: The analysis of the obtained results showed that cervical spine traction does not strain the cardiovascular system. In the group of subjects with arterial hypertension, a linear value reduction of all the heart hemodynamic parameters measured in the successive trials was observed. The most significant difference between the initial and final test was observed in patients, in whom the traction procedure was only simulated. Conclusions: Cervical spine traction performed according to D. Saunders’ method does not constitute any threat to patients with arterial hypertension.

Background. Y – Balance Test Kit is a widely used tool for dynamic balance assessment. However, the so far applied research protocol has been developed only for football training adults and youth aged 14-17 years. The main goal of the research was estimation of the reliability and the necessary number of trials to obtain stability of the Y-BT results on a sample of football training children. Material and methods. The sample comprised 60 children training football, aged 10-11 years. Y-BT Kit was used for the assessment, involving four training tests in each direction, both with the right and the left lower limb. Next, the participants performed five tests in each of the three directions. After each test, the relative length of the lower limbs was measured to calculate the values of distance according to the formula: (the distance obtained during the test/the relative length of the lower limb) *100. Results. Stability of the obtained values was achieved after 6 tests for the posterolateral (right lower limb) direction and for the anterior direction (left lower limb). No differences were found between the fourth and the fifth test results, and in the seventh test, stability of the results was obtained. The analysis of the interrater test–retest reliability (ICC3.1) results, obtained from the third, fourth and fifth tests ranged from 0.85 to 0.89 and the standard error of measurement (SEM) values ranged from 2,02 to 4.14. Conclusions. It is recommended to perform seven Y-test measurements in football training children as stability of the results is usually obtained after the fourth test.

Wstęp. Y – balance test Kit jest powszechnie stosowanym narzędziem do oceny równowagi dynamicznej. Jednakże dotychczasowy protokół przeprowadzenia badania został opracowany wyłącznie dla osób dorosłych i młodzieży w wieku 14-17 lat trenującej piłkę nożną. Głównym celem badania było oszacowanie rzetelności i niezbędnej ilości prób potrzebnej do uzyskania stabilności wyników na Y-BT w grupie dzieci trenującej piłkę nożną. Materiał i metody. Grupę badaną stanowiło 60 dzieci w wieku 10-11 lat trenujących piłkę nożną. Do przeprowadzenia badania wykorzystano Y – BT Kit.

One of the most important factors of successful ageing is a sufficient level of motor independence, which is strongly associated with an appropriate level of activity. It was decided to determine the relationship between barriers to physical activity and physical activity and health self-assessment in healthy and chronically ill men, among 206 men aged 65–83 years. A relationship was found between kinesiophobia, physical activity and self-assessment of health, and the differences between health self-assessment in the healthy and chronically ill. No differences were found regarding activity. Important factors affecting the health of older men are selfawareness of being chronically sick, BMI and level of physical activity. A relationship exists between kinesiophobia, physical activity and self-assessment of health. The awareness of being chronically sick, BMI and level of physical activity are the most significant factors affecting the health self-assessment of older men.

Supplementation is one of the forms of powerlifting training support. It may have an influence on physical parameters of the contenders and may also have an impact on perception of the body and self – esteem. The aim of the study was to assess relationships between age, BMI, data concerning training, supplementation, self – assurance and body value among the contenders practising powerlifting.51 people who regularly practise powerlifting: 11 women aged 23.5 ±3.6 and 40 men aged 23.9 ±8.5 have been examined using self – esteem (SES) and body – esteem (BES) questionnaires. Data concerning age, BMI, training variables and supplementation have been also gathered.Supplementation is used by 91% of women and 85% of men. Men use more types of supplements than women (p < 0.05). Among women SES does not correlate with any other variables. Among men SES negatively correlates with the number of used supplements, as well as with all of the BES domains.Using supplementation among people who train powerlifting is rather common. Among women, SES in not related in any way with training or supplementation. Among men, lower self – esteem (SES) is significantly counterbalanced with BES.
