Oleanolic acid and ursolic acid occur widely in species of the /Magnoliopsydia/ class. They are classified as pentacyclic triterpenoids, which belong to a large group of compounds known as secondary metabolites. Glycoside derivatives of oleanolic and ursolic acids are saponins, so-called because of their ability to form in water a stable soapy foam. Oleanolic acid and ursolic acid as well as their derivatives reveal antioxidant, antimutagenic and cytotoxic activity. They prevent formation of cancer, inhibit tumor promotion, differentiation of cancer cells and angiogenesis. Therefore potentially they can be used in chemoprevention as well as in cancer therapy.

One of the most interesting groups of secondary plant compounds are penta- and tetracyclic triterpenoids and their glycosides and glycosidoesters. They have a wide spectrum of pharmaceutical activities such as anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-mutagenic, cytotoxic, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-diabetic, antibacterial etc. This review summarises studies on antiviral activity of triterpenoids and their natural and synthetic derivatives. Possible mechanisms of pharmacological effects on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) as well as the prospects for future applications of these compounds are discussed.

Helminth parasites have been always a major problem for humanity. Parasites - both flatworms (Platyhelmintes) and roundworms (Nematoda) cause large losses in livestock and are infecting vast number of people, especially in developing countries. Unfortunately, only few medicines are available for curing helminth infections; moreover, the available ones are not free of side effects and parasites develop tolerance toward them. This is why research interests are focused on the search of natural products of anthelmintic properties and lack of toxicity. Plant triterpenoids, known to possess various biological activities, may prove to belong to this class. This article presents results of studies showing that various forms of these compounds: free aglycone, glycosides and glycoside-esters possess anthelmintic activities against nematodes, cestodes, trematodes and Monogenea.
