Calcium zirconate powders doped with a small amount of CaO were synthesised using the Pechini method. X-ray analysis revealed that solid solution was formed in the concentration up to 51.5% mol CaO. For synthesis of stoichiometric CaZrO3, the highest temperature was required (1150°C), but introduction of excess CaO from 50.5 to 51.5% mol enabled us to lower the synthesis temperature to 800°C. The sintering behaviour of such samples under non-isothermal conditions was studied by dilatometric methods. Deviations were found in stoichiometry; by increasing the CaO concentration in CaZrO3 sinterability improved in comparison to CaZrO3 with stoichiometric composition. The presence of CaO as second phase caused deterioration of the sinterability of the CaZrO3-based samples. Pellets sintered at 1500°C for 2 h reached 96–98% of theoretical density. SEM and TEM observations were used to characterise the microstructure of the prepared samples. The electrical properties of CaZrO3-based samples were investigated by the AC-impedance spectroscopy method. It was found that introduction of excess CaO into the CaZrO3 structure caused an increase in ionic conductivity up to the solubility limit. The possibility of using CaZrO3-based samples for constructing prototype electrochemical oxygen probes to determine activity of oxygen dissolved in molten copper is also demonstrated. [...]

Cancer and cardiovascular diseases are a leading causes of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. Cardiological complications of oncological treatment are a significant problem that can be manifested in both permanent and transient cardiac dysfunction including myocardial damage, left ventricular dysfunction, and heart failure, hypertension, ischemia, as well as arrhythmias or QT prolongation, which can be life-threatening. Early detection of cardiotoxicity due to cancer treatment is crucial in the prevention of adverse cardiovascular outcomes in this group of patients. In this review we try to summarize the role of biomarkers in the detection of cardiotoxicity due to cancer treatment.

On the basis of our earlier studies in the group of 7,8-disubstituted derivatives of 1,3-dimetyl-3,7-dihydro-purine-2,6-dione, some new derivatives of theophylline were synthesized and tested for their electrocardiographic, antiarrhythmic and hypotensive activity as well as for α1-adrenoreceptor affinities. The performed preliminary tests indicated that new compounds did not significantly affect the normal ECG in vivo. As the result of present studies it may be concluded that all compounds did not possess hypotensive and arrhythmic activity. The results of the binding assays on α1-adrenergic receptors showed, that these derivatives display no affinity for α1-adrenergic receptors. Lack of antiarrhythmic and antihypertensive activity may result from the absence of affinity for the α1-adrenergic receptor. Performed chemical modifications lead to the loss of pharmacological activity previously observed among other derivatives in this group. Generally in comparison with the previously reported derivatives, replacing the phenoxyethylpiperazine by other moiety, changed the antiarrhythmic and hypotensive activity.

The aims of the study were to assess whether commonly used anthropometric indices are associated with body fat measures obtained by Bioel ectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) method, and to determine the best anthropometric predictor of BIA - based body fat percentage (%Fat) and visceral fat rating (VFR) in elderly women. The sample consisted of 24 women aged 80 years and older, the residents of long - term care facilities in Upper Silesia (Poland). All women were subjected to standard anthropometric measurements including the following variables: body weight, body height, waist circumference, hip circumference and neck circumference. On the basis o f these measures Body Mass Index (BMI) as well as waist - to - hip ratio (WHR) were calculated. The subjects’ %Fat and VFR were determined by body composition analyzer TANITA BC 420MA (Japan). Pearson’s correlation coefficients were used to quantify the relati onships between variables. Stepwise multiple regression analysis with backward elimination was performed to identify possible predictors. The basic characteristics of the investigated subjects were as follows (mean±SD): age - 85.5±3.7 years; body weight - 60.4±11.6 kg; body height - 150.6±7.6 cm; BMI - 26.6±4.6 kg/m 2 ; %Fat - 31.3±9.6%; VFR - 10.7±2.5. Both of BIA - based measures significantly, positively correlated with body weight, BMI and circumferences of waist, hip and neck (r values from 0.477 to 0.835) . The multiple regression analysis for %Fat revealed that the body weight was the only variable statistically significant (r 2 =0.414; p<0.001; SEE =7.503%), and for VFR the significant β coefficients were obtained for BMI and neck circumference ( 0.625±0.133 and 0.341±0.133, respectively) ( r 2 =0.754; p<0.001; SEE =1.313). Among popular anthropometric indices of body composition in the oldest old group o f women, body weight seems to be the best predictor of body fat percentage, and VFR could be predicted by BMI along with a neck circumference.
