Presented conspect devoted to the subject of cooperation between the coach and the player in individual disciplines of competitive sports concerns the impact of the level of trainer's emotional intelligence to engage in efforts to improve the quality of relationships and a sense of commonality and purpose of a cooperating player. The literature suggests that in order to build and sustain commitment to the player by the coach it is important to include mutual trust, positive relationship and clearly defined goal acceptable to both parties. (Czajkowski 1994). The existing research related to the topic of Emotional Intelligence suggests its impact on many aspects of human functioning in the positive relationship with the environment and the satisfaction and success in the workplace. (Jaworska and Matczak 2005). The indicated dimensions play an important role in the prevention of burnout and improve the quality of cooperation between the coach and the player. Studies carried out on a sample of 48 cooperating sports teams (trainer - athlete) have shown that a significant level of trainers' emotional competence affects the emotional aspect related to the purpose of their trained athletes. Athletes working with trainers who present higher levels of emotional intelligence showed greater satisfaction derived from activities aimed at achieving a common goal and mutual relationship and declared a common vision for the future. These data suggest that the level of trainers' emotional intelligence may be important not only for motivation of cooperating players, but also for the satisfaction they derive from their work, helping to increase the quality of life in the workplace. At the same time, it could reduce the risk of burnout, not only athletes but also trainers.

The purpose of this paper was to confront some selected physiological parameters that describe aerobic capacity with young swimmers’ sports achievements. For the study, some athletes with the average age of 14.67, who train swimming at the SMS Szczecin Club, were selected. A progressive test of their oxygen power was performed in order to determine their aerobic capacity, with the means of the European Ranking (LEN). Each swimmer’s sports level was presented in points [pts.]. The swimmers’ characteristics were presented as divided into three groups: (S) – short-distance specialization, (M) – medium-distance specializati on and (L) – long-distance specialization. In group (S), maximum oxygen consumption – VO2max [l/min] achieved the levels of 3.95 [l/min] (male swimmers) and 2,77 [l/min] (female swimmers); in group (M) – 4.12 [l/min] and 2.97 [l/min], respectively; and in group (L) – 4.14 [l/min] and 3.338 [l/min]. Among male swimmers, level of VO2 max [ml/kg/min] equaled 58.96 – group (S), 59.72 – group (M) a nd 62.10 – group (L); while among female swimmers it reached 48.67 (S), 49.36 (M) and 54.60 (L), res pectively. The recorded values of VO2 max [ml/kg/min] qualify the young swimmers to the group of people with a very high physical capacity. Our selection of Szczecin’s athletes to individual groups proved to be correct. The considerations presented in the paper bring one’s attention to the substantive quality of the intake and selection of swimmers. In the selection, it is necessary to take such physiologic rates as VO2 max or VO2/HR into consideration.

The aim of the study was to analyze the influence of selenium (Se) on the course of oxidative stress in trained athletes, on the basis of own former published studies and the reference of literature. In a number of references it was shown that the application of Se led to the diminishing of oxidative stress during the physical exercises in athletes. The application of Se to athletes − led to the increase of peroxidase glutathione the main selen − dependent enzyme. The fact of increased concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) in blood serum, the main metabolite of lipid peroxidation can indirectly evidence about the intensity of physical endurance. This increase is significantly smaller in individuals taking exogenous antioxidative diet supplement containing Se. Moreover there is the evidence that oxidative muscles damage during physical effort could be diminished by compounds with antioxidative properties. Taking into consideration, the obtained results by many of authors empower to the conclusion that application of Se diminishes the degree of peroxidation of lipids in trained athletes.

In recent years, dance-based body-movement regulated video games have been harnessed in school-based physical health activities. Such programs are used in European primary schools to help schoolchildren to be of better health. In the Greece Primary School curriculum, use of these vidoe games cover aspects of physical, emotional, social and mental functioning and well-being. Herein, the correlation between movement and emotion is evident. This study was to investigate the significance of Play Dance and its impact on primary school education in Algeria. In it, a four-week educational intervention in the field of dance was applied during school recess (morning and afternoon). The daily physical activity was administered in the form of imitating dance moves basing on the Freeze Game (Just Dance Kids 2014) modal and accounted for 10 minutes of the recess time. The sample consisted of 45 male students of the 4rth class, of primary slimani school residence of Naama, a municipality of Mecheria. Pre- and post-testing of the invested program was based on the INDARES program. Data analysis was performed by way of descriptive statistic indices, Paired Samples Correlations, and Paired Samples Test. The results showed differences between the start and end of the educational intervention. It is, hence, recommended as it engenders considerable physiological and motor improvements thst correlate with the children’s overall health.

The demand for native medicinal plants has gained much attention among the developing tropical regions of the world in the last decades owing to their relative affordability, acclaimed efficacy and perceived user safety. The rise in the prevalence of chronic diseases, potential treatments and possible cures has led not only to increased patronage, but also to their combination with conventional medicine for better health care delivery and speedy recovery. In this present study, factors influencing these developments were examined. Hence, interview and semi-structured questionnaires were randomly administered among 104 respondents in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. Civil servants, self employed (Herb sellers, traditional medicine practitioners and farmers), unemployed (aged people) and students. Based on the responses obtained, 85% of the respondent stated that they make use of herbs, while 12.5% disagreed and 1.9% was undecided. However, 50%, 38% and 14%, agreed, disagreed and were undecided, respectively to combining herbs and orthodox medicine. Occupation was shown to significantly influence the level of herbal usage and its combination with orthodox medicine. The study revealed the high dependence on herbs and the combined of the use of the same with orthodox medicine, with occupation playing a significant role in each case. These observations underscore the importance of traditional medicine as a subsystem of good health delivery and that a double practice exists among health care seekers.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of acute creatine monohydrate supplementation on fatigue and anaerobic performance. Thirty young soccer players participated in this study. Participants continued their training without taking any food supplements for 5 days, taking 0.3 g of milk dust per kg for 5 days and using 0.3 g creatine monohydrate per kg for 5 days. A total of 6 × 35 m sprint times were used in the fatigue index with a 10-second rest period between them. Single repeated sprint times of 35 m were examined as well. Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were found both fatigue index and single repeated 35 m sprint time after creatine supplementation. However there was not a statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) in Rast Test results. In soccer, it is known that there is a strong positive correlation between game performance and the number of repeated sprint numbers in a game. In conclusion, there was a statistically significant effect of 0.3 g of acute creatine loading per kg over 5 days on the single repeated sprints and fatigue index values. The creatine monohydrate can be used as an ergogenic aid for recovery periods between high-intensity exercises to affect performance.

Specific characteristics of sport disciplines require their performers to meet certain demands, also those related to body build. A success is conditioned, among other things, by the morphological structure of competitors. For this cause, their somatic features should be taken into consideration in the selection process. The aim of this research was to describe the level of morphological development and body proportions of swimmers in comparison to their non-practicing peers. What is more, different methods were used to evaluate body tissue composition. The research was based on the measurements of 33 swimmers and 36 non-practicing sport males as a control group, with the average training period of 9 years. The subjects ranged from 18 to 23 years of age. The anthropometric features were examined. Two methods, anthropometric and bioelectrical impedance, were used to estimate the amount of body fat. Athletes performing swimming are characterized by the significant body height, long trunk, wide range of arms and highly developed shoulder girdle. Directed and systematic training has an influence on a great development of the upper part of the trunk and a slight decrease in body fat. The observed differences indicate that depth, circumference and mobility of the chest developed in swimming have a positive influence on the respiratory system. Poor differences observed in the amount of fat in the athletes and non-practicing subjects may result from the fact that the body accumulates fat tissue, used as a good thermal insulation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of steroidal saponin supplementation on blood concentration of T, GH and IGF-1. The research involved 14 men between the age of 45 and 60 years. The duration of the experiment was 12 weeks. There were two series of laboratory tests. Independent tests were conducted at the beginning and after 12 weeks of the intervention. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA revealed a statistically significant effect of the intervention on the following variables: T-Ch (η2 = 0.542), HDL-Ch (η2 = 0.522), LDL-Ch (η2 = 0.587), T (η2 = 0.603), IGF-1 (η2 = 0.512) and GH (η2 = 0.621). Thus, FFM significantly increased while TBF and BM decreased in comparison to pre-intervention levels. The analyzed results indicate that treatment or supplementation of individual hormone deficiencies can be a successful form of counteracting the aging process. Nevertheless, the effects of TT supplementation on the concentration of T as well as GH and IGF-1, requires further studies, especially in middle-aged and older subjects, along with different exercise programs. The analyzed results indicate that treatment or supplementation of individual hormone deficiencies can be a major form of counteracting the aging process.

Background: The laboratory diagnostics of boreliose is based on detection of specific IgG and IgM antibodies by ELISA test followed by confirmation test of Line-blot. Material and methods: Testing of the presence of specific anti-Borrelia antibodies was performed in the group of 568 forest workers. The ELISA tests were performed in serum, saliva, and dry spot of blood. The confirmation tests Line blot were performed in serum then the prevalence of particular antibodies against Borrelia was calculated. The ELISA test consists complete extract from Borrelia whereas the Line-blot test consists antigens from B. afzelii, B. burdorferi, and B. garinii. Results: The samples from 201 (35%) forest workers have revealed the positive results in ELISA in IgG class and 171 (30) results from this group were confirmed by Line-blot. Only in 40 (7) samples have revealed the positive results in Line-blot but were negative in ELISA tests. The main antigen was VIsE (77%) in IgG class. It has been shown that 119 (21%) samples have revealed positive results in the IgM class in ELISA tests, and from this group 59 (10%) cases were confirmed by Line-blot. Antibody against antigen OspC revealed the highest prevalence (71%) in IgM class. The correlation between samples from sera and mucosal transudate have shown r40.736 in the case of IgG and r40.162 in the case of IgM. Conclusion: The frequency, of anti-Borrelia antibodies occurrence was very high and appeared in 42% of forest workers. It has revealed that the correlation of results between serum and mucosal transudate was not satisfactory in the case of ELISA test. In contrary, the correlation of results between serum and dry spot of blood was very high and should be consider as alternative material for boreliose diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: It was suggested that metabolic syndrome (MS) is an additional risk factor that increases the risk of osteoporotic fractures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of metabolic syndrome on bone metabolism and the risk of osteoporotic fracture in obese men and women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 40 obese men and 40 obese women, divided into 2 subgroups: patients without MS (20 men and 20 women); and patients with MS (20 men and 20 women). The serum levels of PTH, 25-OH-D3, CTX1, osteocalcin, FGF23, total Ca and P were determined. The total absolute fracture risk was estimated using the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool. The control group consisted of 15 normal body mass, healthy men and women similar in age. RESULTS: Obese women with MS have a higher risk of osteoporotic fractures (3.0 vs. 1.6%; p < 0.001) and serum levels of phosphorus (1.8 vs. 1.12 mmol/l; p < 0.001) but lower 25(OH)D3 (7.3 vs. 34.6 ng/ml; p < 0.01) than obese women without MS. There were no differences in the risk of osteoporotic fracture or other study parameters between obese men with and without MS. Women with MS had lower serum CTX1 levels (0.27 ng/ml vs. 0.41 ng/ml; p < 0.05) than men. CONCLUSIONS: Metabolic syndrome does not influence the selected parameters of bone metabolism in either men or women. However, women with metabolic syndrome have lower serum 25-OH-D3 levels. Women, but not men with metabolic syndrome have a higher 10-year absolute fracture risk than obese women with-out metabolic syndrome.

MATERIAŁ I METODY: W badaniu wzięło udział 40 otyłych mężczyzn i 40 otyłych kobiet. Badanych podzielono na 2 grupy: pacjentów z otyłością bez MS (20 mężczyzn i 20 kobiet) i pacjentów z MS (20 mężczyzn i 20 kobiet). W grupach badanych oznaczono w surowicy stężenie parathormonu (PTH), 25-OH-D3, C-końcowego usieciowanego peptydu kolagenu typu 1 (CTX1), osteokalcyny, FGF23, wapnia (Ca) i fosforu (P). Ryzyko złamania osteoporotycznego oszacowano, stosując skalę FRAX (Fracture Risk Assessmen Tool). Grupę kontrolną stanowiło 15 zdrowych mężczyzn i kobiet w podobnym wieku.

The first study was conducted in 1996 in 10 (i.e. all) nurseries and 11 randomly selected preschools in Szczecin. The study involved 526 children (257 boys and 269 girls) aged 1-4 years, and 865 children from preschools (448 boys and 417 girls) aged 4-7 years. In 2006, the study was repeated in seven nurseries (i.e. all nurseries that existed in Szczecin at the time) and 11 preschools in the city of Szczecin, i.e. the same as in 1996. The study involved 314 children attending nurseries: 169 boys and 145 girls aged 1.5-4 and 887 preschool children (461 boys and 426 girls) aged 4-6 years. Motor development of nursery children was assessed based on the Denver test in two selected areas. The level of motor development in preschool children was assessed on the basis of a modified Wrocław Physical Fitness Test developed by B. Sekita. Comparison of the results helped answer the question whether and what developmental changes took place over a decade. The results indicated that the level of motor development of children in Szczecin, compared with children examined 10 years earlier, showed no significant differences.

The leaf extracts of two medicinal plants Asystasia gangetica (L) and Newboulia leavis (p. Beauv) were assessed for anti-snake venom activity in vivo using mice. The result of the phytochemical analysis revealed that the two plants contain flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, tannins and alkaloids. The methanolic extracts of the two plants A. gangetica (L) and N. leavis (p. Beauv) significantly (p< 0.05) neutralized the Naja melanoleuca venom-induced lethality activity in the mice. The extracts (flavonoids, tannins and saponins) of the two plants also showed significant (p<0.05) neutralization of the venom–induced lethality activity in mice. The work confirmed that Asystasia gangetica and Newbouldia leavis possess significant anti-venom activity and can therefore be used in the treatment of snake bites.

Cervical cancer screening allows for the early diagnosis of aberrant cervical cells, such as precancerous cervical lesions, as well as cervical malignancies in the initial stages. Cervical screening has been found to minimize the mobility and mortality of cervical cancer. Cervical screening is not widely practiced in underdeveloped nations for a variety of reasons and barriers. The study aims to explore the perception and experience of the Nigerian students in Sunderland regarding the practice of cervical cancer screening. A qualitative research approach was used in this study using purposive sampling to select the interviewers who are Nigerians. This study was conducted with eight female postgraduate Nigeria students at the University of Sunderland, United Kingdom. Semi-structure in-depth interview was carried out under the qualitative study. The interview was conducted face to face using audio recording, transcribed, and coded for analysis. Finding from this study showed elevated level of awareness of cervical cancer screening as evidence by knowledge displayed by participants and important of the cervical screening to the participants. The level of awareness differs based on their opinion from the experience. This study also highlighted the socio-cultural restrains, structural and economical constrains that served as barriers to the practice of cervical cancer screening in Nigeria. This is revealed by the participant’s feedback to the interview question on the barriers and facilitators to the practice of cervical cancer screening. This implies that these barriers limit the practice of cervical cancer screening. Cervical cancer is a global issue that claims the lives of women. Cervical cancer screening is a good innovation which helps to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer. Recommendation was given to public health, nurses, federal government, and organizations on how to increase awareness and eliminate barriers to the practice of cervical cancer screening.

Introduction: The main treatment for acromegaly is the surgical removal of the tumour. Pharmacotherapy, usually with somatostatin analogues (SSA), is used as the preliminary and/or complementary therapy. In the diagnosis of acromegaly as well as in the evaluation of treatment effectiveness laboratory tests are essential – the serum level of growth hormone (GH) in the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and the serum concentration of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment of patients with acromegaly based on biochemical criteria for cure. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 40 patients aged 25 - 83, hospitalized in the Department of Endocrinology, Medical University of Lodz in the years 2003-2010. The concentration of GH and IGF-1 were determined by enzyme-amplified chemiluminescent immunoassay (EACLIA) on the IMMULITE 1000 analyzer (Siemens). As the criteria of acromegaly cure we assumed the normalization of serum IGF-1 and GH levels after oral glucose administration of < 1 ng/mL. Results: The cure of acromegaly was achieved in 25 of 40 patients (63%). In 14 patients, the normalization of IGF-1 and GH was obtained as a result of surgery, 11 patients achieved normal laboratory parameters after complemantary treatment - five after the treatment with SSA, four after radiotherapy, and two after both pharmaco - and radiotherapy. Fifteen patients from the study group have not been cured - in 13 of them the complementary therapy with SSA was used. Most of them (75%) were operated due to the pituitary macroadenoma. In 11 persons both GH and IGF-1 concentrations exceeded the limits of the reference values. The effectiveness of the operation was higher in patients treated with SSA - among 21 patients treated with SSA before the surgery, only five did not achieve the normalization of GH and/or IGF-1. Conclusions: The evaluation of GH and IGF-1 concentrations with the connection of the magnetic resonance imaging of the pituitary allow to determine the effects of acromegaly treatment. In the majority of patients after the surgical removal of pituitary adenoma, complementary therapy, mainly pharmacological with somatostatin analogues is necessary, and some patients require reoperation and / or radiotherapy. In addition, the preoperative administration of somatostatin analogues greatly increases the effectiveness of the treatment of acromegaly.

W diagnostyce akromegalii, a także w ocenie efektywności leczenia kluczowe znaczenie mają badania laboratoryjne - stężenie hormonu wzrostu (GH) w teście obciążenia glukozą (OGTT) i stężenia we krwi insulinopodobnego czynnika wzrostu 1 (IGF-1). Celem naszej pracy była ocena skuteczności leczenia w ośrodku łódzkim pacjentów z akromegalią w oparciu o biochemiczne kryteria wyleczenia. Materiały i metody: Grupę badaną stanowiło 40 chorych w wieku 25 - 83 lat hospitalizowanych w Klinice Endokrynologii Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Łodzi w latach 2003 - 2010.

Aim of the study was to compare the effect of different molecular weight chitosan on activity of peritoneal cells of mice during immunosupression caused by adult stages of Heligmosomoides polygyrus. We observed that intraperitoneal injections of chitosan induce cell infiltration, but the activity of recruited cells differed depending on the type of polysaccharide used. Low molecular weight chitosan activated cells with inflammatory characteristics, while high molecular weight polysaccharide reduced cell responsiveness to stimulation. Although IgA titers in the peritoneal fluid were elevated, chitosan treatments had no effect on the level of infection.

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of one-day wrestling tournament on magnitude and direction of changes in selected immunological and endocrine status indices. The participants of the study were male (n = 12) and female (n = 13) wrestlers. The earlobe blood samples and unstimulated saliva were collected at three time points: in the morning before the competition (1), immediately after the last match (2) and in the next morning (3). Total protein, IgA and cortisol concentration and α-amylase activity in saliva, as well as concentration of cortisol and interleukin-6 in serum were measured. Significantly lower ratio of sIgA/protein and significantly higher levels of salivary and serum cortisol, interleukin-6, and α-amylase activity were observed at the second time point compared with the first and the third in both groups of athletes. Regardless of the examined time point, concentrations of serum and saliva markers were similar in female and male wrestlers. However, a tendency to lower sAA activity on the next morning after the tournament compared to basal activity of this enzyme was seen in both examined groups. In general, the changes of examined markers were short-lived, except for α-amylase activity, showing that tournament-wrestling matches had no sustained negative effects on endocrine and immunological body systems.

Chitosan (Chi) is an extremely promising natural biopolymer with remarkable potency for the development of drug and vaccine delivery nanosystems. Various Chi derivatives are used to form nanoparticles (NPs) with unique properties. However, the efficacy of the therapy delivered by Chi NPs depends significantly on NP biodistribution in the body. The aim of this study was the analysis of biodistribution of NPs formed by succinoyl Chi and loaded with doxorubicin (SCNPDOX). We compared the distribution of free DOX and SCNP-DOX after intravenous (i.v.) and intranasal (i.n.) delivery into tumour-bearing mice. Distribution of DOX and SCNP-DOX was comparable after i.v. injection while they differed significantly after i.n. instillation.
