In the introduction, the author presents basic information concerning epidemiology and clinic of diabetes, including diabetes in children, and its complications. In the following part, the author presents a review of literature on the impact of diabetes on the histopathological anatomy of the inner ear, pathophysiology of the hearing process and audiometric condition of the hearing organ in people with diabetes, including children with type 1 diabetes. The concluding remarks of the author concern the need for the earliest possible commencement of the monitoring process of the hearing organ in people with diabetes, the value of such audiometric tests as pure-tone audiometry, ABR and otoacustic emissions in the monitoring process, the need to include an otologist or audiologist in the medical team dealing with diagnostics and therapy of children with diabetes, and the need to broaden knowledge among doctors of different specialties on the possibility of hearing damage in such patients. The author signals the need to introduce prospective, precise and well-planned, randomized tests on the condition of the hearing organ in children with diabetes, including type 1 diabetes. The tests should be conducted in multiple medical centers and should include a control group matching the study group in terms of age and sex. The aim of the tests would be to solve problems with audiological diagnostics which to date have remained unsolved.

We wstępie autor przedstawia podstawowe informacje dotyczące epidemiologii i kliniki cukrzycy, w tym cukrzycy u dzieci, oraz jej powikłań. W następnej części autor dokonuje przeglądu piśmiennictwa dotyczącego wpływu cukrzycy na budowę histopatologiczną ucha wewnętrznego, patofizjologię procesu słyszenia oraz stan audiometryczny narządu słuchu u osób chorych na cukrzycę, w tym dzieci z cukrzycą typu 1. Końcowe uwagi autora dotyczą: potrzeby jak najwcześniejszego rozpoczęcia monitorowania narządu słuchu u chorych z cukrzycą; wartości takich badań audiometrycznych jak audiometria tonalna, ABR i otoemisja akustyczna w tym monitorowaniu; potrzeby włączenia otologa lub audiologa do zespołu medycznego kierującego diagnostyką i terapią dzieci z cukrzycą; potrzeby szerzenia wiedzy wśród lekarzy innych specjalności o możliwości wystąpienia uszkodzenia słuchu u tych chorych. Autor sygnalizuje potrzebę wdrożenia prospektywnych, wieloośrodkowych, randomizowanych, z grupą kontrolną osób zdrowych w zbliżonym, do grupy badanej wieku i proporcji płci, badań nad stanem narządu słuchu u dzieci z cukrzycą, w tym cukrzycą typu 1, których celem byłoby rozstrzygnięcie związanych z tą chorobą a nierozwiązanych do chwili obecnej problemów diagnostyki audiologicznej.
