Niezgodność pociągu płciowego, zachowań seksualnych bądź odczuwanej tożsamości seksualnej z budową ciała powoduje u wielu osób rozliczne problemy psychologiczne i bytowe. Dotyczy to około 12% populacji ogólnej. Istnienie odmiennych orientacji seksualnych ma więc także znaczenie społeczne i wchodzi w zakres problematyki szeroko pojmowanego zdrowia publicznego. Autorzy dokonali przeglądu publikacji dotyczących kształtowania się orientacji seksualnej u ludzi, próbując odpowiedzieć na pytanie, jakie są przyczyny powstawania orientacji homoseksualnej. Zagadnienie to ma charakter interdyscyplinarny. Autorzy przytaczają dane dotyczące uwarunkowań biologicznych, neurobiologicznych, genetycznych, hormonalnych, środowiskowych i psychologicznych kształtowania się orientacji seksualnej. W podsumowaniu starają się oszacować, czy współcześnie nauka zna odpowiedź na pytanie o przyczyny orientacji homoseksualnej. Zdaniem autorów, po przyjęciu hipotezy, że u części osób orientacja homoseksualna ukształtowała się pod wpływem relacji rodzinnych, oddziaływań rówieśników i współczesnych permisywnych wzorców kulturowych i wychowawczych, istotne staje się pytanie: czy orientacja homoseksualna jest czasami podatna na próby jej modyfikacji. Autorzy traktują swoją pracę jako wstęp do rozpatrzenia możliwości oddziaływań korekcyjnych.

When sexual attraction, sexual behavior or perceived sexual identity are not compatible with the structure of the body, it causes many psychological, living problems and harm. This applies to about 12% of the general population. The existence of different sexual orientations therefore has social significance and falls within the broadly defined domain of public health. The authors have reviewed past and recent publications on the formation of sexual orientation in humans. They try to answer the question of what the causes of homosexual orientation are. This issue is highly interdisciplinary thus, the authors cite data on possible biological, neurobiological, genetic, hormonal, environmental, and psychological determinants of the development of sexual orientation. In conclusion, the authors try to assess whether modern science knows the answer to the question about the causes of homosexual orientation. According to the authors, after assuming the hypothesis that some persons develop homosexual orientation under the influence of family relations, peer interactions and are influenced by contemporary permissive cultural patterns, then the relevant question arises whether homosexual orientation is sometimes prone to modification. The authors thus treat their work as an introduction to exploring the possibility of corrective activities.
