Cancer diagnosis destroys previous internal and external order of patient, who has not experienced such a situation yet. The most negative emotions, which are felt in the situation of cancer diagnoses are anxiety, sadness, anger, distress and concern about the continued existence and functionality, which can also lead to depression. It becomes essential to identify the grade of bigger distress and depression, which increase suffering of the patient, reduce the effectiveness of therapy, as well as significantly raise the risk of suicide among cancer patients. Article presents general assumptions related to the epidemiology of distress and depression in cancer, diagnostic and range of possible therapies that can be used to treat cancer patients.
