In recent years, the use of hemostatic materials, such as gelatin sponges, cellulose meshes, collagen matrices, glues, products containing human fibrinogen, thrombin and other hemostatics is becoming increasingly popular in daily surgical practice. Available data and expert opinions confirm that their use is safe and effectively prevents hemorrhagic complications as well as anastomotic leaks associated with numerous procedures. Moreover, the use of local hemostatics: reduces the proportion of other postoperative complications, shortens hospitalization time and reduces the cost of the patient's hospitalization time. Results based on the available literature and our clinical experience are reflected in interesting clinical cases presented in this publication. The use of hemostatic materials has been implemented in clinical practice of many surgical specialties, such as: general surgery, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, urology, thoracic surgery. New applications for these products are constantly being sought on the basis of available scientific evidence and clinical experience from many centers.
