Impact of drought on certain species of Desmids
Languages of publication
Abstracts
In July 1982 desmids cells enclosed in mucilaginous sheaths were
recorded during drought in the Bagno Przerębiec transitional peatbog. They were the
specimens of Cosmarium contraetum Kirch., Cosmoastrum punctulatum (Breb.)
Pal.-Mordv. var. kjellmanii (Wille) Pal.-Mordv., Desmidium cylindricum Grev., Desmidium
swartzii (Ag.) Ag. ex Ralfs and Raphidiastrum avicola (Breb.) Pal.-Mordv.
Besides, in certain cells a change in the colour of chloroform from dark green to olive or
yellow-green and numerous oleaginous granules were observed. It may be presumed
that the cells of the above mentioned algae are capable of surviving drought due to their
ability to produce mucilaginous sheaths and areolas, which protect them from drying.
