Cornea of ommatidia in Lepidoptera (Insecta) ? a scanning electron microscope study

The external surface of facets of representatives of 19 families of Lepidoptera is discussed and illustrated. Two types of structures are recognized, this with nipples predominate. The other structures (pleats) developed probably in the course of a reduction. The ultrastructure of surface in the form of granulation is described.
