The review presents the results of recent studies on the multidomain structure of alpha-amylases and mechanism of splitting of alpha-1,4-glycosidic bond catalysed by these enzymes.The model of the catalytic domain A of alpha-amylase as well as the localization and the way of binding of calcium ions are also described.
