The development of granular sludge in the UASB reactor was investigated in bench scale (6,48 dm3).The different substrate loading rates were used during experiment.A synthetic medium based on volatile fatty acid was used. digested sewage sludge from distillery wastewater treatment plant was used as a seed. The granules of ca. 0.5 mm diameter had developed after about 120 days of operation.The setlling rate of these granules was 20-50 m\h.
