Do obszarów badawczych omawianych w tym artykule należą różnice międzyosobnicze w zachowaniu i stałość zachowania poszczególnych osobników w czasie i pomiędzy różnymi sytuacjami. Próby naukowego poznania problematyki różnic indywidualnych i osobowości, czyli osobniczej stałości zachowania, mają długą historię. W artykule przedstawione są przykłady zachowań, w przypadku których występuje zmienność w obrębie gatunku, a także możliwe wyjaśnienia dla ich powstawania i utrzymywania się w populacjach. Krótko omówione są pozytywne i negatywne aspekty badań nad osobowością u zwierząt, a także temat ewolucji zachowań w kontekście ich ekologicznych uwarunkowań, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zjawiska pętli sprzężenia zwrotnego i reguły ochrony zasobów.

Two research areas are discussed in the article: individual variation in behavior among individuals and within-individual constancy of behavior across time and context. Research devoted to individual differences and animal personality, which is individual constancy of behavior, have a long history. This paper provides examples of behavior patterns known to show intraspecific variation and tries to explain how such behavioral diversity arises and evolves in natural populations. Positive and negative aspects of animal personality research are shortly discussed, as well as ecological determinants of behavior evolution. Feedback loop and asset protection principle are mentioned in context of eco-evolutionary casual factors of behavior.
