Summary The paper presents some clinical problems, pathogenesis, as well as personal and social consequences of emotional and mood disorders in women. Special attention is devoted to affective disorders. Recent psychological, sociological and biological theories that attempt to explain higher incidence of mood and emotional disorders in women than in men are discussed. The plausible role of sex hormones is considered. Disproportion between the well established significance of estrogens in the functioning of the central nervous system and their role in the mood disorders therapy is stressed.
