Summary In the years 1994-1997 a gradation of the spruce bark beetle, caused by the drought and the high temperatures prevailing in the previous years, took place in Białowieża Forest. To make an evaluation of the forest's condition after the gradation, a system of a permanent study plots was set in the Strict Protection Area of Białowieża National Park. In the present article are summarized observations from 388 plots. We analysed the proportion of spruce in a lying wood, a tree stand and a new generation of the tree stand, in relation with the character of the forest habitat and the tree stand development phase. The results of the observations confirm the hypothesis that the process of the spruce retiring from fertile habitats has been lasting for several years. The most extensive changes caused by the spruce bark beetle were noted in young mixed/coniferous forest stands.
